about

I first wrote this song on my Casio keyboard. No lyrics, just melody.

When it came time to write lyrics for the song, I tried to pick a theme that matched the feeling of relief in the melody. A few people close to me were going through traumatic long-distance breakups at the time so I decided to write the lyrics around that, hoping to help them cope through the song. I'm not sure it helped them, however; it would be quite arrogant of me to think so, but at least they inspired me to write it.

There's something about writing about other people's situations that I'm partial to. With my own, I have a tendency to write accurately, thinking that if I so much as alter a lyric/feeling/scene to satisfy the song's need, I would betray myself. Outside of my own I don’t have such restrictions, and I can play more.

I have fond memories of recording this song at Goldentone. To create the outro fadeout, a couple of us were hunched over Rob's mixer physically moving the faders. (This was in Rob's previous studio where a lot of things were done manually.)

I intended for the album to have a quiet fadeout so that it could loop back nicely -- like video game music -- into the quiet intro of the first song of the CD.

lyrics

(So) I won't cover for why I don't wanna hang anymore
All that we have said and implored were for naught and we're back to where we were before

So now that we acknowledge where we stand:
we're too remote in two separate lands
We'll burn away the empty vows so much we clouded our days withal
As much as I will miss you dearly so,
we're too involved in two separate worlds
We'll throw away the promises so long we messed our brains withal

The tether line is going
far beyond the point of breaking
me
and at that extent it was
sufficient
for me to see that all the time we spent...

spinning...
around the bend...
is making us happy at my expense.
(It made no sense.)

So I'm not gonna lie as I look in your eyes anymore:
This humbled piece of pie in the sky's all but crumbled and I'm imbibing more and more

I don't want to be alone,
that's why I waited for so long
