about

For the longest time, I couldn't figure out the Chorus for this song.

I mean, I had the rest of it hashed out -- the Verse came from a Soca song blaring out of a "big truck" in Trinidad, the PreChorus from some old Green Day songs (probably), and the main two-note riff from an old episode of Beavis and Butthead -- but the Chorus that would allow the song to circle back and tie them all together escaped me.

Until one night.

Craig and I just came back from a party or a show or some event I don't recall to hang out at my dorm to talk about stuff I equally forgot. What I did remember is that, at one point -- while not fully paying attention to him since I was repeatedly strumming the PreChorus on the guitar -- Craig somehow provided enough background noise to cause my hand to switch chords, which then triggered a series of thoughts leading up to the melody for the Chorus. I honestly don't know how I came up with it at the time, it literally just happened.

I decided that the lyrics should contain tons of references to Trinidad and Tobago because of the song I heard out of that truck.

lyrics

I woke up today, feeling weary, feeling gray
I struggle to pass underneath the sunrays
The latency overcomes me like a disturbing trend
Riding the bus, fast approaching a dead end

What I wouldn't give to be there again
to feel the beach stains beneath the sands -- of T&T

We met to play mas and waved our rags on our way to a fete
And limed at the Bight, reminisce it was last night:
"It's bad luck to go all this way without getting your feet wet"
"(As long as you like) swim, just don't let the sharks bite"

We're green on J'Ouvert and jumped with the pan
When things got rowdy, you take my hand

No one knows me the way you know me
Because every time that you look at me
I realize that my soul is free

And every time you look at me
Look in these eyes, my soul is free
Because every time you look at me
I realize that my soul is free
