about

I wrote the bulk of the lyrics for this song while working the midnight shift at Yulee Hall.

At the time I was listening to a lot of The Mr. T Experience, so there's some MTX-isms here and there in the song, the most obvious of which is the interplay between the main and backup vocals.

There's other dualities in the song, and I wanted both the story, the melody, and the chords to convey that conflict. Once I figured out that theme, the song pretty much wrote itself during one lonesome, sleep-deprived night.

-George Ryan Perez, 15 October 2013

lyrics

You know (you know), you know I love you
I know (I know), I know I care
But all (but all), but all these yearnings
are more than I can bear

While I go on with hiding
these precious notes
I'm burning up inside full of grief
when I saw what I can reap
All for the sake of friendship

You know, I wonder how much longer I can keep this up
You know where I stand, but I can't take it
You know the best things are the ones we can't think about
That's why I can't give up right now

I thought (I thought), I thought I loved you
Distraught (distraught), I ought to skip town
I don't (I don't) don't want to want you
so why do I still hang around?

While I go on withholding:
repress you through red herrings
From the depths of my sleeve
I regret that I deceive
All for the sake of friendship

While I go on with hiding
these precious notes I'm burning up
...but I won't take this lying down
All for the sake of friendship

That's why I can't give up right now
